This is what we’re spinning chez Newman these days:
Not sure how Jim stumbled onto this, but Madeleine Peyroux’ Careless Love is just stellar. She has an Ella Fitzgerald-esque quality to her voice, but her torchy songs are also informed by rootsy country and bluegrass… exquisite.
I’ve always avoided Beck just ‘cuz it’s so … y’know… alt to listen to him. But we heard a couple tracks off Guero at Pablo’s the other night and I’ve had it in heavy rotation ever since (as well as Sea Change. Lame ol’ Rhapsody only has half the tracks on Guero available, so Jim got me the CD for Mother’s Day. Thanks, sweetie! Nobody fuses bleeding-edge electronica and old-fashioned grungy rock&roll and unsentimental pancultural lyrics like Jeff Beck.
Eight minutes ago, the P.Off showed up at my door with an Amazon box containing Straight Outta Newport by Goldie Lookin Chain. The Welsh answer to Licensed to Ill-era Beastie Boys… if their accents aren’t hilarious enough, the lyrics will get you. All laid over some wack synth-infested early-80s beats. "Self Suicide" and "Guns Don’t Kill People, Rappers Do" are highlights. "I thought I was having a go at an overdose but I don’t think you can overdose on Beecham’s Flu Plus." …also "Oh Maggot, he’s a modern day Fagin/ turfing out your pockets like a Christian burns a pagan/ Dripping with charm, style and panache/ He’ll leave you sore like a venereal rash."
