A couple quick -isms, and a Halloween treat

Newest addition to our family’s list of "Things that would never come out of someone’s mouth unless s/he were a parent," as heard from Jim last night:

"Go and put your pet stick outside. If you had a pet elephant, it couldn’t come inside either."

And, though this is not really an -ism, it was v.v. cute: Rhys in the back seat of the car this morning, singing along in his sweet, breathy little soprano to Sufjan Stevens’ "Chicago": "you came to take us/all things go, all things go/to recreate us/all things grow, all things grow/we had our mindset/all things know, all things know/you had to find it/all things go, all things go" …followed by him piping up "I love dis song, Mama; it’s so pretty." And Mama would have to concur. (Er, what’s really cute is that Rhys says "fings" instead of "things." All fings go. I hope he never learns to talk.)

Also: looking for something creepy and cool and crafty for Halloween or any day? Check out the Haunted Paper Toys at Ravensblight. You can print, cut out and assemble anything from the 13-Piece Hearse Playset (complete with coffins and a cool cemetery diorama background!) to Necronomicon book covers, which I totally need to cover up the embarrassing cheesy artwork festooning many of the fantasy novels I love. Last night, I made skeletal friends for the boys: Fisher got a pirate and Rhys a gladiator complete with cloak. It took about twenty minutes to make each, and I was ingesting my daily ration of news from the anchor team of Stewart and Colbert while doing so.

Tomorrow: Halloween pictures, probably, and Rhys’ description of our field trip to the recycling center.

Ah, yes. See, I think the little darlings *make us BLITHERING IDIOTS.* They coerce unto using such weird logic! Our logic about sticks is that any sticks that are inside get used as firewood. However, we’ve had to go back on that since Zac just *loves* staffs. He cannot be without at least three or four of them in his room. There is just no talking him out of this, and to suggest that “you have enough already” is pure folly.

Pics! We want pics! Had our first-ever trick-or-treaters last night, and my, were they ever cute. And polite. Am very impressed with DC children now. My favorite costume of the night: a six-year-old (or so) girl was dressed in a Snow White dress and a witch’s hat with whiskers drawn on her face. She was, she said, “Snow White dressed as a cat and wearing a witch’s hat.” Very clever.

Ooh I like the medieval helmets…..and what’s wrong with fantasy novel art? 😉 The ones I’m reading right now are pretty cool actually..

Kate has taken to playing with deodorant sticks and toothpaste tubes. She lines them up and talks to them.
